"The first character is named Flynn and he's a vampire with special abilities. For three years he was the assassin for a very prominent, ambitious she-vampire, before he attained his powers and discovered they were to be used to protect humanity. So now he's, in essence, a vampire hunter with psychic abilities while still being immortal himself.

Monica, however, is a mortal in her early twenties. She is something called a "watcher" to Flynn and has special abilities as well. (Watchers in this world are, essentially, sorceresses.) Her general job is to protect and assist the seer (what Flynn is). While she and Flynn start out as partners, they end up falling in love with one another through the course of the book, so there is definitely some emotional attachment between the two of them.
